There are 99 spires in all. Their construction on a pier extending into the North Sea drove Duke Erik IV of Klungendorf into bankrupcy. After the collapse of Communism in East Germany, the town went bankrupt and sold the buildings to a developer who restored them and put them up up for commercial lease. They now house an upscale shopping mall.
